A Mass by Benoît Mernier.

The commission comes from Henri Lambert, chaplain to the artists of Brussels, and Xavier Deprez, one of the organists of the Saints-Michael-and-Gudula Cathedral, marking the 30th anniversary of the "Artists' Mass". The brief is twofold: the work must serve a religious office — that of the feast of Christ the King — as much as the concert hall. To this is added a strong instrumental context: the new Grenzing organ has just been inaugurated, and the Missa Christi Regis Gentium is among the first creations written for this exceptional instrument.

The grand form — Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei — carries a dramaturgical and theological weight inherited from centuries of practice. "When you embark on such an adventure," the composer confides, "you immediately think of Beethoven's Missa solemnis or Bach's Mass in B minor." The risk of inhibition is real. It is the spatial and vocal constraints of the Cathedral that allow him, he says, "to set aside, for a moment, the weight of History."

The Latin text remains strictly faithful to tradition. It is in the vocal writing and the spatialisation that Mernier opens up. The Chœur de Chambre de Namur, malleable by definition, allows a plural treatment: vocal divisions, soloists integrated within the choir, a double chorus in the Sanctus drawn from the Venetian tradition. And the vertical distance separating organ from choir in the Cathedral imposes its own constraint: at certain moments, the two focal points operate without full synchrony. The language remains essentially modal.

I think of the organ part as a symphony orchestra,
working through layered sound planes —
in the manner of the Baroque or pre-Romantic. — Benoît Mernier, interview with XXI Music Publishing

Benoît Mernier is himself an organist. The Grenzing, with its two expressive manuals, allows crescendi and diminuendi without changing registration — hence the analogy with an orchestra moving through layered planes. The organ part is conceived to be transposable to any large symphonic organ with three manuals and pedal: an assumed inscription within a tradition, rather than detached experimentation. The colour, in turn, is Latin — Debussy and Ravel openly claimed. Counterpoint is everywhere: "we are not in mass effects here, but in a declension of vocal and instrumental colours drawing on a fairly broad contrapuntal spectrum." The Gloria, which spans almost half of the total duration, is its centre of gravity. Each movement carries its own colour; the harmonic language ensures continuity.

Liturgical premiere on 26 November 2000, the feast of Christ the King, at the Saints-Michael-and-Gudula Cathedral in Brussels. Concert premiere on 30 November 2000 at the same venue, by Xavier Deprez (organ), the Chœur de Chambre de Namur and the Capella Sancti Michaelis under the direction of Olivier Opdebeeck. The same performers go on to record the reference reading for Cypres.
